Day Of Portugal

On the 10th June, Portugal and all Lusitanian communities worldwide celebrate Portugal’s national holiday. Not only is the country (homeland) celebrated but also one of the most important poets of Portuguese literature – Luís Vaz de Camões, born around 1524. A lyric, epic poet and also a playwright, Camões travelled to Ceuta in 1549, where he lived until 1551, at which time he began to lose sight in one of his eyes, a problem which would inevitably lead to blindness.

In 1572 he published “Os Lusíadas”, his great apogee dedicated to King D. Sebastião. “Os Lusíadas”, a detailed look at Portuguese history from its foundation through to the  discovery of the sea course to India by Vasco da Gama, symbolises the hope of an imperial future. Luís de Camões aquired his important role due to his wholehearted identification with his homeland and language, becoming a symbol and being celebrated, on the day of his death (June, 10th), by the inauguration of the Portuguese national holiday.
